Do you already have the basic details about your ancestor’s service in the Australian military, but want to dig deeper? If so, this defence service records masterclass is for you. Patrick Ferry from the National Archives of Australia will share with you a range of other sources which can help you flesh out the story of their wartime service.

Patrick Ferry is the Assistant State Manager, Public Engagement for the National Archives of Australia in Victoria. Patrick is a professional archivist, local historian and author who has undertaken extensive research using defence service records and related sources. His book, Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat: Remembering the Pakenham District’s WW2 Service Personnel, 1939 – 1945 (written with Wally Nye) won a 2020 Victorian Community History award.

We’ve all experienced the thrill of finding that elusive record that connects you to an ancestor. What about the disappointment of discovering that you are not biologically connected after all? Or that you have a less than reputable ancestor?

Susan is a retired academic psychologist whose major research interests encompass key transitions across life stages, including parenting, adolescence, grandparenting and retirement. Since retirement, Susan has turned her attention to family history and the nexus between genealogical research and life span psychology.

As part of this interest, she published several articles in the academic journal Genealogy, co-edited a Special Issue of that journal ("Focus on family historians: How ancestor research affects self-understanding and well-being"), and co-authored a 2021 book, The Psychology of Family History, with Doreen Rosenthal and Rebecca Robinson.

Susan completed the UTAS Diploma of Family History in 2018 and has written short books (just for the family!) about some of her own and her husband’s ancestors.

Chris Collins became interested in genealogy when her daughter was in Grade 6 and interviewed her grandfather about his experiences during WWII. Chris worked on her family tree at home whilst running her own business. After retiring in 2017, she joined FHC.  In 2020, Chris and her Leadership Group established the program ‘Using DNA in your Genealogical Research’, firstly as in-person meetings then morphing into the online DNA  Interest Group.

Dianne Fox began researching when she was 8 doing a school family history project. Dianne has pursued her research in Australia, New Zealand, England and Ireland.  She worked as a Probate Genealogist and her passion now is DNA and how it can help to confirm genealogical paper trail and breakdown those lines where no paper trail can be located.
